This vintage J. Sainsbury Bloater Paste pot features a distinctive cracked glaze and black ironstone lettering. Originally produced to hold herring paste, described as a 'tasty tea-time treat on toast', it was made to a closely guarded recipe at Blackfriars from the 1890's until after the Second World War.
This pot has a hairline crack as can be seen on the photos.
